Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - Civil Aviation Security.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

285 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has satisfied himself that all airlines operating in and out of Ireland are complying with aviation security rules; and the steps his Department are taking to ensure that such rules are being adhered to.

The National Civil Aviation Security Committee under the chairmanship of my Department advise the Government on civil aviation security matters and in particular reviews the effectiveness of existing measures and procedures. Having regard to the security recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation and the European Civil Aviation Conference, the committee co-ordinate the activities of the various agencies involved in security measures and examine the effective implementation of these by airlines and airport authorities.

The security standards and procedures which are recommended by the national committee are effected and monitored on a continuous basis by authorised officers of my Department.

It will be appreciated that the details of specific measures cannot be given but I can say that I have confidence in the State's present aviation security arrangements.
