Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - Compensation for Imported Mail Deliveries.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

288 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications whether he has pursued the question of overseas payments to compensate An Post for being a net importer of mail and other postal services; if there is an EC policy directive being developed in this matter; if so, the attitude of the Irish Government to same; if he has any statistics to show the cost to An Post of distributing imported mail for which they currently get no income and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of pursuing compensation for the delivery of imported mails is a matter for An Post. I have no statistics to show the cost to the company of distributing such mail. The EC Commission is preparing a Green Paper on postal matters, including suggestions for new arrangements compensating postal administrations for handling imported mail. The paper will be a discussion document and will form the basis for proposals for Community measures in the postal area.
