Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - Meningitis Cases.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

22 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the unusual increase in the number of cases of meningitis in the Cork area; if he will give the latest figures available to him on the number of cases reported; if any investigation is planned into the reason for the increase; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There has been an increase over the first two months of this year in the number of cases of meningitis above what is normally expected. However a wide age range and a wide geographical spread indicates that it is an increase in isolated cases rather than a localised epidemic. Only three cases had known contact.

The figures notified to my Department are as follows:

1990

Cork City/South Cork

16

North Cork

6

1/1/91-28//2/91

Cork City/South Cork

6

North Cork

8

Local hospitals, public health nurses and general practitioners are keeping a vigilant watch on the situation and I can assure the Deputy that I am keeping the matter under constant review in conjunction with the Southern Health Board.
