Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cavan Services for the Elderly.

Andrew Boylan

Ceist:

29 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the long waiting list for admittance to St. Felim's Hospital, Cavan; if, in view of the overcrowding there, he will consider opening Lisdarn Hospital for the more mobile patients instead of leaving it vacant; if he accepts that such an exercise would create jobs and alleviate a very serious problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The North Eastern Health Board have recently submitted to my Department a planning brief for the development of services for the elderly at Cavan General Hospital. The brief includes provision for the location of a day hospital, assessment unit, rehabilitation unit and heavy dependent nursing units on the site of the Cavan General Hospital at Lisdarn. Approval to proceed with the appointment of a design team is under consideration in my Department at present. The project will be considered in line with available resources and other competing projects included in the Department's capital programme for 1991. The board plan to open a number of respite care beds in the near future at Cavan Welfare Home.
