Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - Food Hygiene Standards.

Jim Kemmy

Ceist:

83 Mr. Kemmy asked the Minister for Health if he will ensure greater uniformity among the health boards in the implementation of food hygiene standards; and if he will further ensure that all boards are provided with proper facilities for the accurate testing of such food and adopt standards comparable to internationally accepted norms.

I am satisfied that there is already a high degree of uniformity among health boards in regard to the implementation of food hygiene standards.

My Department issues, as may be necessary, guidelines to health boards in regard to food inspection and sampling programmes and plays an active role with health boards in ensuring a uniform interpretation of food hygiene requirements.

All health boards have available to them adequate laboratory facilities for food analysis to meet current requirements. I am satisfied that the standards compare favourably with generally accepted international standards.
