Vol. 406 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rathfarnham (Dublin) Castle.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

131 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works have received an application from the Rathfarnham Concert Band Society for accomodation in Rathfarnham Castle; if it is intended to respond positively to this request; if it is intended to demolish the Castle wings and, if so, the reason; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Following an architectural survey of the buildings which found that the wings could not be economically adapted to a reasonable standard for modern day use, it was decided to remove the modern wings and to restore and present the castle as a major national monument. While the proposed use of the castle itself by the society would not be appropriate, Dublin County Council are aware of the society's interest and may take this into account in its consideration of the development of the out-buildings.
