Vol. 406 No. 5

Written Answers. - “Social Housing”.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

72 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if, in regard to the use of the new phase social housing he will define when social housing ceases to be social housing; if housing which depends upon its provision for State assistance is regarded as social housing; and if State assistance includes the first time purchaser, grants and/or mortgage interest tax relief; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

"Social housing" is a widely recognised general term for housing provided either directly by, or with substantial support from, public authorities to meet the needs of households whose means are inadequate to provide them with access to suitable and adequate housing. Housing otherwise provided by the private sector, even if it avails of State assistance, is not regarded as coming within the term.
