Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - Goods Vehicles Statistics.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

181 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment the number of trucks in excess of two tons registered in Ireland for each of the past five years; if he has satisfied himself as to their general level of road worthiness; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of registered goods vehicles — with unladen weight in excess of two tons (2,032 kilos) — under current licence at 30 September in each of the past five years is given in the following tabular statement.

Year

Number of goods vehicles over 2 tons

1990

25,922

1989

25,042

1988

24,743

1987

24,651

1986

24,298

At present, goods vehicles with unladen weights greater than 1.5 tons, which are over one year old, must be road-worthiness tested annually. Any vehicle which initially fails this test must be repaired and passed as roadworthy before the vehicle concerned can be relicensed to carry goods on a public road. Imported used heavy goods vehicles over one year old must be tested and passed as roadworthy before being fully licensed to carry goods.
