Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - DES Drug.

Nuala Fennell

Ceist:

214 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the conclusive evidence which he has, that the drug DES was not widely prescribed in this country in the seventies, as outlined by him in an adjournment debate of 6 December 1990.

In my statement to the House on 6 December 1990, Vol. 403, No. 6, Columns 1599-1601, I indicated that no information on the prescribing of DES in this country during the forties, fifties and sixties is available. However, at the same time, I indicated that prescribing was not likely to have been widespread because, from the early sixties, it was medical practice that the use of drugs in the care of women in the areas of gynaecology and obstetrics should be kept to a minimum. I also invited Deputy Fennell to make available any information she might have on the matter and would take this opportunity of reiterating that invitation.
