Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - MMDS Relay System.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

253 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the widespread discontent throughout rural Ireland at his plans to introduce an MMDS system television relay; if he will review this matter forthwith and consider upgrading and regulating existing deflector systems; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My objective in this matter is to achieve, for the people of Ireland, real multi-channel choice of high quality for every household in the land. I intend to hold discussions shortly with MMDS operators and other interested parties in order to find a solution in the best interests of the consumer.

The reasons for not licensing rebroadcasting systems have been dealt with in a number of replies to questions in this House. In particular, I refer the Deputy to Question No. 65 on 18 May, 1988, columns 1791-92, volume 380, Official Report, No. 8 for that day, and to Question No. 87 on 20 November 1990 columns 1802 — 3 volume 402, Official Report for that day.
