Ceist:

72 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will outline the matter discussed at his meeting on 7 March 1991 with trade unions representing staff in An Post; if the matter of the arbitrary decision of An Post to end the conciliation and arbitration scheme was discussed; if he will outline his views on this decision by An Post with specific reference to its implications for industrial relations within the company; if he received a request from the unions to refer the entire viability plan to an independent third party for examination; his response to such a request; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not normal practice to reveal details of matters discussed at meetings to third parties and in this particular instance I feel that it could be most unhelpful if it were to be done. I am not, therefore, prepared to add anything to the press releases issued on my behalf on 7 and 13 March 1991 on the matter.
