Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

243 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the continued backlog in the number of persons awaiting driving tests and the continued threat to safety on Irish roads he has now reconsidered his position in relation to meeting with representatives of the approved driving instructor register to discuss the way in which those currently engaged in providing driving instruction could facilitate the work of his Department in a manner that would reduce danger to life on our roads and the consequential costs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I announced last year when I launched the current road safety campaign, the setting up of a voluntary registration scheme for driving instructors was to be considered. Possible arrangements for such a scheme are being examined in my Department at present. It is my intention that those groups and organisations involved with the business of driving instruction will either be invited to meet with officials of my Department and/or make appropriate submissions on the matter before final decisions are made.
