Vol. 407 No. 2

Written Answers. - Ross Castle (Killarney) Restoration.

John O'Leary

Ceist:

24 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline in relation to the restoration of Ross Castle, Killarney, County Kerry (a) when approximately it will be completely restored and reopened to the public and (b) the total estimated expenditure to date on this work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The structural stabilisation of Ross Castle has been a major and complex restoration project.

The castle was built in the 16th century but was vastly altered in the intervening centuries. These alterations, together with a general decline throughout a long period, led to a weakening of the structure. Particularly serious problems arose in the mid-1980's when it was found that substantial cross-walls were structurally unsound. This involved considerable extra work and the main part of the castle had to be held together with steel supports to prevent collapse.
These major structural difficulties have now been overcome. The pace of the work has been increased in recent years due to the application of additional resources which became available from the EC Structural Funds. The large external shoring has been removed and this greatly improves the appearance of the castle. The recently increased pace of work will be maintained and it is hoped that the building work and fitting-out will be completed to enable the castle to be opened to visitors for the 1993 tourist season. The total estimated cost is £1.8 million.
