Vol. 407 No. 2

Written Answers. - Archaeological Investigations.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

41 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide the necessary resources to have archaeological investigations carried out in the vicinity of Carrigafoyle Castle, Ballylongford, County Kerry.

Carrigafoyle Castle is located between high and low water marks on a sea inlet off the Shannon estuary and an archaeological excavation there would be technically very difficult and, consequently, very expensive. The protection and conservation of any archaeological remains which would be uncovered would, likewise, be very costly. In the circumstances, I do not consider that this is a case to which the resources provided for national monuments should be allocated.
