Vol. 407 No. 2

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection-Amenities Funding.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

51 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline the full details of all coastal protection-amenities programmes funded by the Government in the past two years by way of (1) national lottery funding, (2) EC funding or (3) direct Government contribution.

State funding for coast protection was transferred from the Commissioners of Public Works to the Department of the Marine on 1 January 1990. The expenditure from the Vote for the Office of Public Works in 1989 on coast protection was £90,528.41. The funds were expended on the maintenance of a number of completed schemes. The expenditure by my Department on coast protection in 1990 was £1,049,753.68 and, apart from maintenance of completed schemes, a new capital scheme at Arklow north beach was undertaken. None of the above works benefited from EC funding.

As regards the national lottery, I have no details of any funds derived from that source which may have benefited coast protection works.

As regards amenity programmes, there is a grants scheme for improvement works to beaches which is administered by the Minister for the Environment.
