Vol. 407 No. 2

Written Answers. - Stone Throwing Attacks on DART Trains.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Ceist:

72 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to recent stone throwing attacks on the DART; if he will have these investigated with a view to improving security to protect passengers and DART personnel; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are aware of a number of recent incidents where stones were thrown at the DART and that these have been fully investigated.

The Garda authorities have taken a number of preventative measures to deal specifically with this problem. These include the deployment of gardaí in areas where such incidents are known to have occurred and, as an added precaution, the assignment of gardaí to travel on trains, where necessary. The Garda authorities have also informed me that they are monitoring the situation and will continue to maintain close co-operation with Iarnród Éireann with a view to taking whatever action may be appropriate.

I am also informed that a private security company is contracted by Iarnród Éireann for general security duties, including security for the DART system.
