Vol. 407 No. 2

Written Answers. - Clonakilty, Cork, Flooding.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

77 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline (1) the reason for the delay in replying to Clonakilty Urban District Council regarding their application for funds for the proposed tidal barrage in Clonakilty Bay and (2) the reason responsibility for the funding of this barrage is not being accepted by his Department in view of the fact that an engineer's report dated 26 November 1990 states that the flooding in Clonakilty town is essentially due to tidal incursion causing the River Fergal to overflow its banks.

There was no undue delay in dealing with this matter. As the flooding at Clonakilty is principally due to tidal incursion, relief works would not be eligible for funding by my Department, which is concerned with surface water run-off affecting urban areas.
