Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sligo Houses Repair.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

184 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment if he has notified Sligo Corporation, as he has notified a Dáil Deputy, that 100 per cent funding will be made available from his Department for the replacement of all defective chimneys in Abbeyquarter, Cranmore, Sligo including corporation and purchase houses; and if, in view of the fact that the corporation have recently stated that the Department have not altered the scheme terms of 50 per cent of house purchase, he will make a statement on the matter.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

185 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment the funds which were made available this year specifically for the repair or replacement of defective chimneys and associated work in Abbeyquarter, Cranmore, Sligo excluding other housing remedial work in the corporation area; the funds which were made available last year specifically for the chimney work, excluding other remedial work on houses in the corporation area; the total funds so far made available specifically for the chimney and associated work; and the amount of these funds which have so far been expended.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 184 and 185 together.

The terms of the remedial works scheme under which this project is being funded provide that the maximum contribution which my Department can make in respect of private houses is 50 per cent of the cost of approved work and there has been no departure from these terms in this case. Arrangements for the funding of the balance of the cost are a matter for Sligo Corporation and they have been informed that the Department have no objection to the proposals which they have formulated in this regard.
Allocations of £300,000 in 1991 and £100,000 in 1990 were made to the corporation in respect of the Abbeyquarter and St. John's Terrace remedial works schemes. The apportionment of the allocation between these projects is a matter for the local authority. In 1990, capital expenditure of £30,000 was incurred in respect of St. John's Terrace; the authority have not, to date, informed the Department of any such expenditure in the Abbeyquarter Estate.
