Vol. 407 No. 4

Written Answers. - Wexford Fish Farm.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

38 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Marine if he has satisfied himself that all EC Directives are being complied with, in relation to the granting of a foreshore licence to a company (details supplied) for a proposed fish farm in County Wexford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Following long and thorough examination of this matter, my Department recently issued a licence under the Foreshore Act, 1933 to the company in question, authorising the use of part of the foreshore at Ballyhealy, County Wexford, for the laying of intake and effluent outfall pipes, and ancillary equipment, in connection with a proposed land-based trout farm. The proposal had already received planning permission from Wexford County Council of which the Deputy is a member, as well as an effluent discharge licence under the Water Pollution Act, 1977: the latter was upheld following appeal to An Board Pleanála on the basis of evidence presented to an oral hearing.

I am satisfied that the issue of a foreshore licence in this case is in full compliance with the relevant European Community Directives.
