Vol. 407 No. 4

Written Answers. - Enployment of Home Help.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

39 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance the number of people who are claiming the tax free allowance for the employment of home help to care for an incapacitated person; the cost of this allowance to the Exchequer; and the likely cost if eligibility for this allowance was extended to those who have a family member giving them full-time care but who is not formally employed.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that it is estimated that some 200 incapacitated taxpayers are currently in receipt of this allowance at an estimated annual cost to the Exchequer of £0.2 million. Statistical data are not available which would enable the cost of extending the allowance in the manner referred to by the Deputy to be estimated.
