Vol. 407 No. 4

Written Answers. - Employment of Teachers.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

107 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if she intends instructing boards of management to make permanent those teachers who are now in-quota and employed on a temporary whole-time capacity.

Pending the introduction of a redeployment scheme for surplus teachers in community and comprehensive schools, the policy of my Department has been, as a rule, to approve teaching appointments on a temporary basis only. I am aware that this restriction has created difficulties in certain cases and I have, consequently, reviewed the situation. As a result of that review, I have decided to allow boards of management of community and comprehensive schools to make permanent appointments in certain circumstances.

Accordingly, it will now be open to the board of management of a community or comprehensive school, having due regard to the enrolment trends and curricular requirements of the school, to make permanent appointments to the teaching staff where such are warranted by reference to the ordinary junior and senior cycle enrolments and where such appointments can be accommodated within the normal staffing allocation.
