Vol. 408 No. 2

Written Answers - Pupil/Teacher Ratio.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

22 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the number of classes at primary level with a pupil/teacher ratio of 35:1 or over; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In 1989/90, the latest year for which figures are available, there were 540,000 primary school pupils approximately. The number of such classes referred to by the Deputy in ordinary national schools was 5,486. This was 394 less than the previous year and represented a fall, in one year, of 15,028 in the number of pupils enrolled in such classes.
