Vol. 408 No. 2

Written Answers - Parking Fines.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

94 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the amount collected in parking fines in the Dublin Corporation area in each of the past three years; the percentage of this which was used to pay wages and expenses of parking attendants and the number of attendants involved.

The amount of money collected on foot of "fines-on-the-spot" notices which were issued in the Dublin metropolitan area and which were not the subject of court proceedings for each of the past three years was: 1988, £1,915,850; 1989, £2,146,943 and 1990, £3,043,000. The wages and allowances paid to traffic wardens from the Garda Vote for each of these three years amounted to £851,897, £647,009 and £1,029,742, respectively.

Substantial additional moneys by way of court imposed fines were also received by the Exchequer in each of these years. However, court records are not maintained in a manner which would enable the amounts received in fines in respect of parking offences to be separately identified.

The number of traffic wardens employed by the Garda Commissioner at end-December in each of the three years was 93, 87 and 126, respectively.
