Vol. 408 No. 2

Written Answers - Cork City Policing.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

112 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if he has satisfied himself with the level of Garda foot patrols operating in the Cork city area.

The detailed policing arrangements for particular areas are a matter for the Garda authorities who inform me that every effort is made to maximise the number of gardaí assigned to foot patrol duties and other outdoor operational duties in Cork. The local Garda officers are satisfied that the best use is being made of available resources at present in meeting the policing needs of the city.

The community policing scheme, which was extended to Cork in November 1990, has an important role to play in the policing arrangements for residential areas. Gardaí assigned to such duties perform foot patrols in their assigned areas during their tour of duty and the scheme has proved very successful in fostering closer Garda/community relations and providing the reassurance of a more visible Garda presence in local neighbourhoods. At present, eight gardaí are assigned to community policing duties in Cork city and an extension of the scheme to the Glen/Farranree Farrancleary area will take place shortly. Further extensions of the scheme in Cork will take place as circumstances allow.
