Vol. 408 No. 2

Written Answers - Provision of Halting Sites.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

119 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he proposes to publish a national policy for halting sites so that each local authority will be obliged to meet their responsibilities in accepting a fair share of the itinerant population in halting sites under their jurisdiction; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I refer to the section of "A Plan for Social Housing" dealing with the accommodation of travelling people (pages 16 and 17).

Housing authorities have been requested, as soon as their current assessment of the need for the provision of serviced halting sites in their area has been completed, to draw up, as a matter of high priority, a clearly defined set of propsals to meet the identified needs.
In addition, city and county managers have been requested to send my Department quarterly reports on progress on the provision of accommodation of travellers.
