Vol. 408 No. 4

Written Answers. - Nurses Job Sharing.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

151 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Health the number of community care nurses who have been approved for job sharing in each of the health board areas; the number of cases which were refused; his views on the application of this scheme in this area; and if he will ensure that all health boards will comply with the terms of the scheme.

Applications from individual staff for job sharing are processed by their own employers having regard to the availability of suitable replacement staff and the need to maintain services. Records are not available in my Department to indicate the number of applications approved or refused by individual agencies. The number of nurses currently job sharing is 1,778 of whom 62 would be assigned to community care.

The terms of the job sharing scheme in the health services have been in place for some time and the application of the scheme is discussed by my Department with the health boards from time to time. I am satisfied from these discussions that, as a general rule, the terms of the scheme are complied with.
