Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Williamstown (Galway) National School.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

229 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the widespread anger in the parish of Williamstown, County Galway because of the lack of adequate school transport facilities to Williamstown national school; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that some years ago when Williamstown became a central school, parents of children in the schools which were then closed were given a guarantee that their children would be entitled to free transport to the new school; if she will provide the same guarantee of transport to parents of the children in the Castletogher-Gurteen area of the parish as was heretofore the case; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that the transport arrangements were not adequate before now and that the provision of the extra small bus, recently approved is totally inadequate; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware an additional bus was sanctioned for this service recently.

I am satisfied that all the eligible children attending Williamstown national school, including any from Gurteen-Castletogher, have a reasonable and adequate level of service.

In this case, as in all similar cases involving amalgamation, a letter was issued from the Department which confirmed the transport entitlement of the children from the closed school areas. The Department are honouring this guarantee in full in providing for all the eligible children.
