Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mayo Regional Technical College.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

231 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the Government's position on the provision of a regional technical college in Castlebar, County Mayo; whether Government support is still forthcoming for the concept; if she will further outline the progress which has been made since the Government took office in 1989; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

232 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the progress which was made arising from her recent meeting with a deputation from Mayo Vocational Educational Committee concerning the introduction of third level courses to be held in Castlebar, County Mayo; if she has approved any such courses; if so, if she will outline the nature and extent of same; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 231 and 232 together.

I recently had a very useful meeting with a deputation from Mayo Vocational Education Committee. The deputation raised for consideration the provision of third level courses in Castlebar on an outcentre basis. The deputation said that they had some discussion with the health board with regard to the acquisition of part of a hospital in Castlebar for the purpose of accommodating the proposed outcentre provision. I told them that the relevant section in my Department would be asked to look at the building and to report on the matter.

With regard to course approval, any outcentre provision of courses would have to be under the aegis of a regional technical college and, therefore, the question of approval of specific courses does not arise at this time.

I will be keeping an active interest in this matter.
