Vol. 409 No. 9

Written Answers. - Special Education Places.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

138 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education whether her attention has been drawn to the shortage of places for children in the Tallaght area who have special needs in education; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that (1) the parents of one child who was assessed and recommended for placement in the St. John of God special school in Rathgar, Dublin 6, were told that only six places were available for 20 children seeking placement, (2) this child will be nine years of age shortly and (3) the availability of special education places for this child and others in Tallaght is an urgent need.

I and my Department are not aware of the shortage of places for children with special educational needs in the Tallaght area. However, if the Deputy would like to furnish me with details of the specific case he mentions, I will be pleased to have the matter investigated.
