Vol. 409 No. 9

Written Answers. - Roadside Letter Boxes.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

27 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications whether, in the light of his recent proposal to introduce roadside letter boxes in which he cited their use in other European countries he has taken into account the vast disparity in the infrastructure of Switzerland and Sweden as compared to Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not proposed the installation of roadside letter boxes. As the House is already aware, An Post have proposed the installation of 200,000 such boxes, as one of a number of measures which they consider necessary to achieve their objective of returning the company to financial health.

The House is also aware that I have referred the roadside letter box proposal to consultants, recommended by the NESC, for the socio-economic study of the implications for rural communities.

I have instructed An Post not to proceed with the letter box proposal until I have examined the recommendations of the consultants.

I will, however, convey the Deputy's point to the consultants for their consideration.
