Vol. 409 No. 9

Written Answers. - US Immigration Services.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

37 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the United States Immigration Service, which has been granted pre-inspection immigration services at Shannon Airport, under the Air Navigation and Transport (Pre-inspection) Act, 1986 is refusing to allow pre-inspection of passengers of Aeroflot; his views on this position; if he will consider amending the 1986 Act so that all carriers would have to be treated equally; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under the agreement between Ireland and the US on pre-inspection, which is scheduled to the Air Navigation and Transport (Pre-inspection) Act, 1986, airlines with flights destined non-stop from Ireland to the US who wish to avail of pre-inspection at Shannon Airport must submit an application for pre-inspection to the US Immigration and Naturalization Service.

I understand that an application from Aeroflot to the US Immigration and Naturalization Service is under consideration at present.
