Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

79 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Energy if standards of electro magnetic radiation specific to health exist in Ireland; and, if so, if he will outline the details of same.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 78 and 79 together. There is at present no central authority in Ireland in relation to the assessment of the effects of, the laying down of protection measures for or for the regulation of the occurrence of nonionising radiation such as electro magnetic radiation. There is as yet no clear evidence of any adverse effect from this kind of radiation, but the matter is receiving greater attention internationally.

Section 9 (1) (c) of the Radiological Protection Act, 1991, provides that the Minister for Energy may, by order, extend the powers and functions of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, to be established in the near future, to cover matters pertaining to non-ionising radiation as may be specified in the order.
