Vol. 409 No. 9

Written Answers. - Wexford Non-National Road Funding.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

101 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment if he will sanction as an urgent priority the Wexford internal distributor road for Spawell Road to Redmond Road; if his attention has been drawn to the importance of this road for the success of the Wexford urban renewal programme and for the proper flow of traffic through Wexford town; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that the road in question would be a non-national road. Primary responsibility for the planning and execution of any works on such roads, including the provision of the necessary finance, rests with Wexford Corporation as the road authority for the area. The cost of such works would fall to be financed from the local authority's own resources supplemented by the block grant for non-national roads provided annually by my Department. Works carried out in this way do not require my approval and the priority to be afforded them is a matter for the local authority.
