Vol. 411 No. 6

Written Answers. - Vocational Training for Deaf.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

18 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Health if he will support the CREDO submission to the EC Horizon project in regard to making of vocational training more accessible to deaf people; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Horizon programme is an additional initiative by the EC Commission aimed at further improving the economic and social integration of people with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups through transnational innovatory actions between the member states. The allocation to Ireland for the whole Horizon Programme is 10 MECU, £7.7 million, for the three year period 1991-93. The allocation for the disabled element of the programme is £4.79 million.

Applications for assistance under the programme were received from 114 organisations providing services for disabled people seeking a total of £29.2 million aid. In view of the resources available, regrettably it was not possible to include the CREDO project.
