Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Registration of Trust.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

143 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice whether a trust (details supplied) is a registered charity and if so, the purposes for which it is registered; if the various nation wide collections organised by the trust are officially authorised; if he has satisfied himself that all moneys collected are utilised for charitable purposes; if its accounts are made available to his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no register of charities in the State and charities are not, therefore, required to be registered.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the body referred to by the Deputy has been granted a licence by the District Court for the promotion of periodical lotteries under section 28 of the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, and the Periodical Lotteries Regulations, 1961 and 1966. One of the conditions for the grant of such a licence is that the series of lotteries in question must be for some charitable or philanthropic purpose or purposes. I am also informed by the Garda authorities that the licence of the body referred to was renewed by the District Court as recently as last July and that accounts are being submitted by that body in accordance with the regulations.
