Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Junior Certificate Technological Subjects.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

201 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if she will outline her plans for a continuing programme for those students who are taking technology at junior certificate level in 1992.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment has prepared a working paper on the provision for technological education in the curriculum. This paper was prepared in the context of revised syllabi in technological subjects at junior certificate. It discusses, inter alia, the provision of technological subjects at leaving certificate.

Students who complete the junior certificate programme in technology in 1992 can proceed to the existing leaving certificate technological and science subjects or the technology subject in senior certificate. A number of schools are already providing technological education components within the transition year option programme.

It would not be appropriate to provide a new subject prior to a detailed review of the senior cycle curriculum which is now under way and pending consideration of the working paper prepared by the NCCA.
