Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Insurance Cover for School Children.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

211 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if she will make special arrangements to ensure that children are insured on school premises prior to the commencement of class, at playtime and when they are delivered by school bus or private transport or waiting to be collected; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Responsibility for ensuring that sufficient insurance cover is provided for pupils and teachers in schools is a matter for each individual board of management. My Department have advised boards of management to effect adequate insurance cover against any claims which might arise.

The whole issue of insurance was considered in some detail by the primary education review body. In view of my own concern about this issue and taking into account the review body's recommendation in this regard, I am initiating discussions between my Department and the interested parties with a view to preventing or minimising the risk to pupils.
