Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Psychological Assessment Availability.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

57 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the extent to which psychological assessment is available in the various primary schools throughout the country; her plans if any to improve the situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Psychological assessments are normally provided by arrangement with the appropriate health board and with the consent of the parents. Parents may also arrange to have their children assessed privately, if they so wish.

In relation to a specific provision at primary level, I have initiated a three year pilot project for the establishment of a psychological service for primary schools. The project commenced on I September 1990. This project is operating in two areas, one urban, West Tallaght-Clondalkin and one mainly rural, South Tipperary. An independent evaluator has been appointed to assess the project. In the light of experience of the project, I will consider the feasibility of extending the service nationally.
