Vol. 411 No. 8

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Strength.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

28 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the current strength of the Defence Forces; if it is intended to initiate a further recruitment campaign; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As of 30 September 1991 the total strength of the Permanent Defence Force was 13,112 all ranks.

To date in 1991 personnel have been recruited to the PDF as follows: 104 apprenticeships were awarded, 54 for the Army Apprentice School and 50 for the Air Corps Apprentice School; 40 cadetships have been awarded, 30 for the Army and 10 for the Naval Service; 19 technicians were enlisted in the Naval Service; 6 engineers were commissioned as technical officers in the Corps of Engineers; 1 dental officer.
The question of further recruitment for general service is being kept under review in the light of operational requirements. In that connection the level of wastage from the Defence Forces this year has been remakably low.
