177 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will outline in respect of the board of each semi-State body under the aegis of his Department (1) its membership (2) the membership of their subsidiaries and (3) the emoluments received by each member in the past year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following tabular statement gives, in respect of each of the boards of the semi-State bodies under the aegis of my Department, the names of the board members together with the annual fees paid to them. The tabular statement also contains information in respect of the boards of the CIE subsidiaries — Iarnród Éireann, Bus Éireann and Bus Átha Cliath, the members of which are appointed by the chairman of CIE with my approval.

I have no statutory function in relation to the appointment of members of the boards of other CIE subsidiaries or of the subsidiaries of the other State bodies under my aegis. This is a matter for the day-to-day administration of the semi-State bodies concerned.

*Mr. G. T. P. Conlon (CIE) and Mr. M. Dully (BFE) operate as full-time executive chairmen of the bodies concerned. Separate fees are paid to them as members of the boards.

†The normal fee for the chairman of An Post is £2,400. However, as an exceptional measure sanction was given to An Post in July, 1991 for the payment of a gratuity of £7,600 to the current chairman of An Post for year ending 15 February 1991 bringing the total fee for that year to £10,000 and for a total fee of £25,000 for one year ending 1 May, 1992, when the matter will be reviewed. The sanction took account of the major executive input of the chairman in relation to the reorganisation of An Post.
