Vol. 412 No. 5

Written Answers. - Allenwood (Kildare) Power Station.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

136 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Energy (1) if he will outline the scope of the review of demands and requirements for the ESB and Bord na Móna at Allenwood, County Kildare (2) on whose initiative the review was undertaken (3) the terms of reference given to the review group (4) when it is expected to have this review completed (5) if any directive will issue on completion of this review and (6) if the review will have some impact on the future of the Allenwood power station and Bord na Mona production in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have recently appointed a consultant to undertake a brief review of the operations at the peat-fired electricity generating station. The purpose of this review, which is being undertaken at my initiative, is to determine the scope for improving the efficiency of the operations at these stations. I expect to have the consultant's report before me by the end of the year and I will consider the report's findings at that stage.

The review will be confined to an examination of the operation of the milled peat-fired generating stations and will not, therefore, have any impact on the future of the Allenwood power station. The position in relation to the future of this station remains as I have outlined in recent replies to the Deputy.
