Vol. 412 No. 5

Written Answers. - Drug Use.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

172 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health whether the drug fluoextine is in use in Ireland; and if his attention has been drawn to the numerous adverse reports on the effects of this drug.

The drug fluoextine is the subject of a product authorisation in this country and is indicated for use in the management of depression. It is available only on prescription and would only be used by patients under the care and guidance of a medical practitioner.

I am aware that there are a number of reported alleged adverse reactions to this particular drug. The drug is, however, subject to ongoing monitoring by the National Drugs Advisory Board, which monitoring would include the alleged reactions referred to.
