Vol. 412 No. 5

Written Answers. - Recognition of Qualifications.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

210 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education the reason there is a fee of £100 and a long waiting period involved in applications made by graduates of the University of London Institute of Education who require to have their qualifications recognised by her Department in order to qualify for teaching positions in this country.

In general, qualifications obtained outside the State must be assessed by the Registration Council for Secondary Teachers for the purposes of recognition as a registered teacher.

Such assessment is very detailed. When all the relevant information and documentation in relation to a particular qualification have been received by the secretariat they are presented to the council at their next meeting. At present the council meet in January, May, September and November each year.

The fees charged are intended to defray the cost of the council of having the qualifications assessed.
