Vol. 412 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mortgage Interest Relief.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

101 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the total number of people currently in receipt of mortgage interest relief; the total value of such relief; the cost of restoring such relief to 1985 levels; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is estimated that some 311,000 tax-payers are eligible for mortgage interest relief for the income tax year 1991-92 at a cost to the Exchequer of £225 million.

The full year cost to the Exchequer in 1991-92 terms (and assuming current tax rates etc.) of restoring this relief to the levels which were available for the income tax year 1985-86 is estimated at £56 million.
