Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Garda Operations Reorganisation.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

189 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if he is considering the reorganisation of Garda operations in the Cork city and greater Cork area in view of the dissatisfaction expressed by the Garda authorities in that city.

The Garda authorities inform me that there is no requirement for a reorganisation of Garda services in Cork city and accordingly there is no proposal to undertake one.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that media reports of views expressed by Garda management in Cork city related more to the resources available to local officers than to Garda organisational structures in the city. The Garda authorities consider that the current allocations of Garda manpower and resources to Cork city are already at a maximum having regard to overall demands on Garda services. The commissioner has arranged, however, for Assistant Commissioner O'Toole to carry out an examination of Garda resources deployment in the city in the near future in the course of his divisional inspection programme.
