Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Taxi Plates.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

224 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, in relation to the issuing of 100 additional taxi plates, some applicants may make multiple applications; if he will ensure, in order to avoid a lottery type situation, that (1) priority will be given to applicants with the maximum points who are currently unemployed and (2) application will be limited to one per applicant; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1991 provide that the Garda Commissioner must consider applications made to him for new taxi licences in accordance with criteria set out in the schedule to the regulations.

When the regulations were made, it was not the intention that multiple applications by any person would be permissible. I understand, however, that there may be some doubt about this aspect and I am considering what action might be taken in the matter.

The detailed arrangements for receiving and considering applications, for making offers to grant licences, and for the granting of such licences, are matters for the Garda Commissioner.
