Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - School Transport Service.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

36 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the extent to which school transport to primary or secondary schools has been curtailed since the summer holidays; if he has received any appeals in respect of this service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There has been no policy to curtail school transport. All school transport routes, primary and post-primary, are subject to review to ensure the most economic provision of services having regard to changes in pupil numbers and location from year to year. This involves frequent modifications of existing routes, many of a minor nature, as well as the introduction of new routes and the termination of others.

My Department ensure that all services operate in accordance with the terms of the school transport schemes.

It would not be possible to provide the detailed information sought by the Deputy since alterations to the service are ongoing and nationwide. However, if the Deputy has a specific case in mind I will be happy to have the matter looked at within my Department.
