Joseph Doyle

Ceist:

38 Mr. Doyle asked the Minister for Education (1) the number of inspectors in his Department for the primary and post-primary sectors and (2) the number of inspectors for each subject area at post-primary level; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Michael Lowry

I propose to take Questions Nos. 38, 50, 62, 72 and 97 together.

The numbers of inspectors employed in the primary and post-primary sectors of my Department are: Primary, 81; Post-Primary, 60.

The numbers of inspectors — exclusive of top management — for each subject area at post-primary level are: Irish, 7; History, 2; Irish and History, 1; English, 6; Physics, 1; Chemistry, 2; Chemistry and Physics, 1; Biology, 1; French, 3; Mathematics, 2; Geography, 2; Music, 1; Classics, 1; German, 1; Art, 3; Home Economics, 3; Commerce, 3; Electrical Engineering, 1; Electrical Installation, 1; Agricultural Science, 1; Woodwork, 4; Metalwork, 3; Mechanical Engineering, 1; Physical Education, 4.

The Civil Service Commission, at the request of my Department, are currently making arrangements for the recruitment of additional inspectors to both the primary and post-primary sectors — at least one at primary level and eight at post-primary level — the latter in the disciplines of English, German, mathematics, biology, engineering, geography, business studies and home economics.
