Ceist:

270 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the number of days unqualified substitutes were employed in national schools (1) during the school year 1990-91 and (2) during the months September and October 1991.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 45, 269 and 270 together.

The total cost of substitute cover in national schools in the period 1 December 1990 to 30 June 1991 was £5,862,846. The total cost of unqualified substitution in that period was £694,234.

The total number of substitute days worked by qualified teachers in national schools in the 1990-91 school year was 139,385 and in the months of September and October 1991 18,845 days. In the school year 1990-91 unqualified substitutes served for 25,321 days and in the months of September and October 1991 for 1,568 days.

My Department are currently examining the implications of the establishment of a supply panel of trained teachers on a pilot basis.
