Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - National Schools Staffing.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

46 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the names of primary schools who have this year been refused sanction of extra assistant teachers because pupils in a repeat sixth class or seventh class are deemed to be invalidly enrolled; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the valid enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year.

My Department operate a policy of discounting from valid enrolment pupils who are repeating sixth standard, unless those pupils are repeating for exceptional reasons.

My Department do not keep separate statistics on the number of such cases occurring in any given school year. However, the number of schools affected is quite small.
